All those Christmas toys

5 Jan

As usual, the kids got way too many presents from everyone, which means we had to cull lots of their old toys to make room.  And luckily for me, ToyTainer sent me a bunch of their products just before Christmas, which means extra storage places for all those Christmas toys.

For every day use, this is our favourite ToyTainer

For every day use, this hang on a door ToyTainer is our favourite.  As you can see, there is no room IN the closet for toys….

The princess castle (picture above) is a great space saver since it goes over the door.  It also has adjustable height straps, which is super awesome.  I put it on it’s very lowest setting so that Hannah can see in the mirror from the ground (which she loves), and reach even the highest toys with her stool.  Most importantly, Rosie (our new puppy) can’t get any of the toys in it, which makes it a great place to store all of Hannah’s enticing, chewable, puppies-like-to-rip-the-hair-off dolls.  When we travel somewhere that doesn’t have any toys, we can fold up the princess castle, with all the dolls and things in it, and take it with us.  Easy, and perfect for holidays/vacations.  Daniel got the boys version, called games centre, which has a basketball hoop at the top.  Hannah likes using the hoop, but Daniel is a bit too small for it.  He will appreciate his games centre when he is a little older.  And taller. For now though, it’s great for extra toy storage.

The hoop makes cleaning up super fun.

The hoop makes cleaning up super fun.

We also got a shoe box for each kid.  Hannah decided immediately upon opening hers that it is called a “Caravan Bag” and likes to take it in the car filled with my little ponies and other girly things.  Daniel likes to drive his cars and trains around on his and then put them away through the little opening at the bottom.  I like how they are portable storage, but also a toy in themselves.  We had to go on an unscheduled trip over 4 hours away to attend Aaron’s Nanna’s funeral and the kids piled their caravan bags with chosen toys.  Daniel’s fit heaps of Thomas engines, train tracks, cars, dinosaurs, and the mat I talk about below.  Hannah’s fit ponies, books, play jewellery, and her play mat.  I was surprised at how much stuff can actually fit in them, and they were perfect for taking away with us.

aka "Caravan Bags"

Another easy clean up and travel item is the EZ-mat.  There is a pink one with dirt roads/trails, and a blue one with roads.  The kids can play on them and then use the cord to turn them into a bag with all the toys and cars inside.  Brilliant for travel.

There is also the pink ice cream truck which Hannah absolutely loves because it’s fun to push around and unlike most cars and trucks that size, is not made with boys in mind. She loves that it’s pink.  Open the top of the truck and it’s completely hollow, designed for storage. Hannah stores all of her little toys that Daniel is not allowed to play with due to their choking hazard.  They are now all in the one place, and easy to store away from Daniel’s prying hands when Hannah isn’t playing with them.

The debate (and a giveaway!)

21 Apr

Just to let you know, there is a giveaway at the bottom of this post.

Our debate topic was selected to go first.  It felt like my heart was beating so hard, it might just come right out of my chest.  My armpits started sweating.  I tried to slow my breathing in order to control my nervous rapid heartbeat, but my efforts were futile.  Instead, I forced myself to listen intently to the other team so that I could offer valuable and punchy rebuttals whilst trying to ignore the extreme nervousness and anticipation I was feeling.

I had practiced my speech in front of a mirror about a thousand times.  I knew my information, but I still had all of it typed up with exactly what I wanted to say sitting on the table in front of my just in case I had a brain fart at an inopportune moment.

“My name is Sheri, and I know I am speaking last today, but as you can see, two members of our team didn’t show up, so I am not going to be filling the role of last speaker, but will be speaking as the second speaker because that was my original role.”

Debates are usually 3 on 3, but there weren’t enough people to make a 9th debate team, so our debate was 4 on 4. Unfortunately, two of the people on my team didn’t show up, and one person on the opposing team didn’t show up.  What the point of enrolling in a class, paying for the class, and then not turning up to the second day of a compulsory 2 day workshop is, I’m not sure, but whatever.

“The other team said that late abortions, even after 24 weeks should be allowed if the fetus is likely to be disabled.  Do you think that disabled people are somehow less human or that disabled people have less of a right to life than able bodied people?  I think Stephen Hawking would have a few things to say about that.”

I could hear the reactions of the crowd. I could see the pleased look on their faces, and the slightly shocked look on the opposing teams faces.  Sure, Stephen Hawking was born with a disability, but that is not the point, and the crowd knew it.  And I knew a line like that would get everyone’s attention and compel them to listen to the rest of what I had to say, rather then sit there fidgeting whilst their minds were somewhere else.

My nerves were making my legs physical shake underneath me, but my voice did not betray me.  I don’t think anyone noticed my shaking legs, and I  somehow delivered my speech better for the audience than I did to the mirror.  They listened to my every word and cheered for me when I was finished.

My debate. In case you're interested.

My debate. In case you’re interested.

“Ok, show of hands, who thinks the for team won?”  The teacher asked.  Only 2 or 3 hands went up.

“Who thinks the against team won?” About 13 hands went up (our class was divided into two groups for the debates so that we didn’t have to sit there for four hours, while everyone had a turn).  Some people didn’t vote.

We did it.  With two team members who didn’t turn up, we still won. Not that winning affects our scores, we are each scored individually based on our performance on the day, and then weighted according to how our team members scored our teamwork leading up to the event, but still, it was nice to win.

Everyone else had debated before, so I was the only debate virgin.  It’s a requirement in high school over here.  Lucky for me, I was a horse nerd growing up.  I was in horse 4-H from when I was 4 until I was 18.  To compete at the county fair horse shows, it was a requirement to complete 1 or 2 (can’t remember which) horse judgings, which were essentially mini shows with only 4 horses/riders in which the audience had to judge the class themselves.  The closer you got to what the real judged scored the class, the better you did.  It just so happened that I was very good at horse judging.  I was on the county judging team, and qualified to do horse judging at state level. I even won at State once.

At state level, and even some county events, we were required to give oral reasons, which involved standing about 2-3 feet in front of someone like Pat Pehling, who was the Head of the Snohomish County4-H Horse program (and a quick google check reveals that, OMGosh, I think she still is!!!), and delivering a memorised speech of why you placed the horses/riders in the order that you did, in a structured manner.  Pretty much like a one sided debate.

When I first started competing in horse judging, I completed workshops and participated in information nights so that I would have the best chance I could at doing it right.  The thing I remember most is being told that most people lose lots of points in their oral reasons because they don’t make eye contact with the person scoring them.  From that moment on, I resolved that I would not be one to lose marks just for not making eye contact.  I would stand there in front of Pat Pehling, gazing straight into her eyes for the whole 1-2 minutes no matter how awkward and uncomfortable it felt at the time.

And you know what? That is what I did. Every. Single. Time.  I forced myself to talk at a reasonable pace, not too fast or too slow or stumbling over my words, speaking in a clear, strong, confident voice, no matter how unconfident I felt, all whilst staring down the person judging my oral reasons.  And for that, I always got very good scores for oral reasons.

I used the eye contact and voice skills that I learned all those years ago in my debate, since I didn’t have any other experience to go on.

Who knew that years and years of being a horse nerd would translate to winning a university debate all this time later?  See, it pays to be a nerd 🙂

GIVEAWAY!!

To celebrate the win, and that fact that horse 4-H helped us win, I am giving away a double pass to the  Cavalia show in Sydney on the 21st of May. The winner will be able to collect the tickets from the box office.

Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse, an innovative multi-media and multi-disciplinary production created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co- founders of famed Cirque du Soleil, announces the addition of two more cities to its debut tour of Australia. Cavalia will open in Sydney on May 15, 2013, under its signature White Big Top, on The Showring at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park.

I can't wait to see Cavalia! I get to go opening night with Aaron.

I can’t wait to see Cavalia! I get to go opening night with Aaron.

Enjoyed by some 3.5 million people across North American and Europe, Cavalia is a lavish production involving 50 magnificent horses and featuring 42 riders, aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians from all over the world. A show unlike any other, Cavalia celebrates the relationship between humans and horses, virtually reinventing the equestrian arts.

In Cavalia, horses cavort with the many artists in front of a constantly changing digital background projected onto a 60 metre-wide screen, drawing spectators into dream-like virtual environments. Unlike traditional horse shows, Cavalia’s audience faces a single 50 metre-wide stage which allows the horses space to gallop at full speed, at times running completely free, unfettered by bridles or halters. Cavalia takes place under a white, big top, rising some 35 metres high that gives the horses an ample playground to perform with their trainers and artists. Cavalia’s gleaming White Big Top is the second-largest touring tent in the world – surpassed only by the one housing Cavalia’s sister production, Odysseo.

To enter, just comment below and I will draw a random winner via random.org.

-Competition open to anyone 16+ worldwide, but winners must be in Sydney on the 21st of May to collect their tickets and go to the show. ID is required at the box office to collect your tickets.

-Prize is non-transferable, non-changeable, non-refundable.

-Competition ends Saturday, 27 April 11:59pm.

UPDATE:

Congratulations to Ann, who was commenter number 9 and won the double pass to Cavalia!

Limetree

8 Feb

After waiting more than a month for our new NAS (which Aaron tells me means networked attached storage. Whatever that means), Aaron got an email from the company he bought it from saying that they tried to deliver it, but we weren’t home.  If we’d like them to try again, it would cost an extra $10.  Um…what?

I’ve had plenty of things delivered here via courier and otherwise, and if we’re not home, they leave a little note saying to call the courier company to arrange a drop off time.  Easy.  Not with this place.  I don’t even know which courier company they used. I actually think that they didn’t use any courier company. Because as I said, they always leave a note. And they make it easy for you to contact them.  The goods don’t go back to the company after one failed attempt.  That would not be good business, and besides, not very many people are home in the middle of the day anyway.

After that little incident, Aaron did a bit of research on the internet and found many, many comments about said company being a scam.  Sigh.  The only reason we bought it from that particular place is that they were the only ones who had the exact model of NAS that we already had.

You know, the one that blew up in the freak storm.  The one that held every single one of our digital photos that go back almost 10 years.  We have some photos of Hannah printed, framed, and on our walls.  We have a couple of photo books full of nothing but images of her.  But I haven’t yet gotten around to making a photo book full of Daniel, or printing photos of him for the walls.  And guess where all of the photos of him were? On the NAS.  The one that blew up. Yes, that one.

We were hoping and praying that if we bought another NAS, exactly the same as the first, we could take the hard drives out, put them in the new one, and they would magically work.  Maybe it would just be the plug that was shot, and not the hard drives.  We’d have the best chance of revival if we got the same model.  Something about the array and how it reads the drives.  I don’t know, I’m not a computer nerd, but Aaron told me something of the like.

As soon as we realised the company was dodgy, we got online and attempted to find someone else that had the same NAS.  We found one we thought was the same, but when it came, less than a week later, it was a little different.  It also didn’t read the drives.  Or they were corrupted.  Or something.

Aaron found some software online that claimed to be able to recover things from corrupted drives.  “It costs $60 bucks though.” He told me.

“I don’t care what it costs, I want those photos.” Seriously, photos of my babies are priceless.

We did manage to recover most of them.  It took hours and hours, but we have most of them back.  Some are completely gone though.

Shortly after the NAS blew up, I got an email asking if I’d like to be an ambassador for Limetree.  I clicked the link and found an absolutely fantastic idea:  You upload photos, videos, even letters and set a date for them to be delivered to your child(ren).  They are stored online (though privately, no one else will have access to your photos/videos), so even if your house burns down, you will still have your precious photos.  Even if your NAS blows up, if you uploaded them on Limetree, you will still have them.

limetree

On the delivery date, your child will get to see years and years of photos and videos.  You can show them their first bike ride (and you’d better believe we took video of that!), first day of school, the first time they held their baby sibling.  The list goes on and on.  I can only imagine the excitement I would have felt if Limetree was around when I turned 18 and my parents had it set up.  I would smile as I looked at photos of my gigantic fat baby self, and when I used to crawl on the table to steal cherry tomatoes out of the salad, and my first pony ride.  What a priceless gift, and definitely one I want to give to my children.  I know they will feel so loved and so special when they receive their photo and video delivery on their 18th birthdays (which is when I’m setting the delivery date for).

My brother and me when we were little. See, I told you I was a fat little thing.

My brother and me when we were little. See, I told you I was a fat little thing.

I know that all the photos I upload for them, and videos too, are safe no matter what happens to us and our computers and/0r house.  What a fantastic idea.  And even better, you can do it for free.  Or, if you’re like me, and take a million and one photos of each event, you can upgrade to a very reasonably priced paid plan.

Needless to say, I am an ambassador for Limetree.  And they gave me a premium membership too.

Not only me though, they are also offering 15, yes, FIFTEEN of my readers premium memberships as well.  If you are one of the first 15 readers to comment on this post, you will win yourself a premium membership for one year.  After that, you can go down to a free membership, and you won’t lose any of the photos and videos you’re already uploaded, or you can renew your premium membership yourself.  Oh, and Limetree would love it if you like’d their facebook page.  And of course, I’d love it if you like’d Mommy Adventures’ page too 🙂

Almost a tear

22 Aug

I had been dreaming about it for a long time. Fantasising about all of the things I could get done. Giddy over the thought of having a day all to myself. A day where I wouldn’t be up to my elbows in someone else’s poop. I had been counting down the days with delight.

And then that beautiful day arrived. I drove the kids to daycare, Daniel’s very first day, Hannah’s very last. But there was no happy dance. Not even a gigantic smile. Instead, I nearly cried. Yes, me.

After I spent way too long telling Mel (who looks after the kids at her house, it’s family daycare) all the ins and outs of Daniel’s sleep routine, what he likes, doesn’t like, etc. I stood there for a bit, not wanting to leave, but knowing I needed to. I had to step out that door, and leave my baby behind. Just for the day.

What if he cried for me? What if he wanted to come over to me and give me one of his trademark affectionate head butts? What if he was overtired and couldn’t get to sleep? What if he missed me so much he just couldn’t settle down? What if he didn’t eat his lunch because I wasn’t around and the whole thing was just so new/weird/different? Would he be ok without me? Would he go from room to room searching for me? Would he be happy? Oh my gosh, what if he wasn’t?!

It was easier the first day I dropped Hannah off at Mel’s. She was two and a half. She could talk. She understood what was going on. She wanted to go. I know because she told me.  She was older, I knew she’d be ok.

I know you’re all wondering, am I going back to work? Is that why I put him in daycare? No. I intend to do a lot of house chores, and finally finish my book (the one about pregnancy). Research shows it’s actually good for kids to go to daycare a day or two a week once they turn one. Plus I plan to start uni next year, so I wanted him to be very settled in his care and start slow, with just the one day per week.

Before I even finished explaining Daniel’s sleep routine, he was off. He high-tailed it to the toy room and didn’t look back. I went in before I left to say goodbye and let him know I’d be back later (And of course to give Hannah a hug and kiss too.) I expected a stream of tears, yelling, and him looking up at me with those sad puppy dog eyes while he hugged my leg.

Instead, he turned straight back to the toys. So I left.

I thought about him all day. Wondering how he was doing. If he was crying, or sad, hungry, confused, etc. I managed to hold off texting Mel until mid day when I couldn’t take it any longer. So I wrote to her “How’s he going?”

“He’s loving exploring around.” She wrote back.

He even went to sleep without much fuss. I know he does that here all the time, but not without me reading to him, singing to him, and giving him a kiss and putting him in his own cot. Not without me.

He was fine all day. He didn’t cry or get upset. He didn’t wander around saying “mommy, mama,” while sticking his bottom lip out. Not at all. He played. He explored. He had a great time. He did just fine. Which is great, but the selfish part of me wanted him to miss me. Wanted him to call out for me. To be a little bit sad when I left.

I know, that sounds terrible, and I’m really happy that he did so well. I’m sure I’m not the only mom who feels this way. I’m really hoping he does just as well this week. Last week he had Hannah there with him, but this week she started preschool. Consequently, she won’t be at daycare with Daniel. Hopefully he won’t mind.

How to Choose the Best Preschool for Your Child: The Ultimate Guide to Finding, Getting Into, and Preparing for Nursery School

I know, adorable right?

Since I’m currently weaning Daniel (we’re down to one very quick feed before bedtime, and hopefully that will cease in the next few days), and I no longer have to worry about such things as breast pads and waking up in puddles of milk (which I unfortunately have, more than once. I even ruined a mattress), what better time to do a breast pad giveaway? That’s right, no better time! Don’t worry, these aren’t my old, don’t-need-them-anymore pads, these are brand new, haven’t actually been released in Australia yet breast pads. So if you win, you’d be one of the first people to try them out.

Don’t forget your night breast pads or you might wake up in a puddle.

To win one of 5 packs of Philips Avent Night Breast pads (to curb that annoying puddle wake up), all you have to do is comment on this post. Winners will be drawn via random.org. Must be an Australian resident to enter. 5 winners will be chosen. Winners will be sent a feedback form in the post after their trial. Winners will be drawn 27 August 2012 and will be notified via email.

How to keep your hair away from pulling baby fingers

15 May

I can’t wear my hair down around Daniel anymore. He thinks it’s an awesome fun toy made just for him. Any hint of loose hair and his lightning quick reflexes are all over it, pulling at will and attempting to ingest.

Yeah, I’ve used this image before. Whatever, it takes a long time to draw stuff!

Considering I lost half my hair after giving birth to Daniel, I don’t really want him to pull out what little is left. I’m glad it’s growing back, but now I look like this:

So I wear my hair up every day. I’m a bit time poor. Well, it’s more like if I attempt to make a bit of an effort, and take my time doing my hair, a cheeky baby crawls up to me and tries to climb up my leg whilst making irritated mommy-pick-me-up-now noises. Not to mention Hannah will also be there asking me to play with her. So yeah, I just throw my hair in a low pony tail as quickly as I can and I’m done.

Until I was sent some lovely new Flexi Clips from Lilla Rose consultant,Linda Menke. They came with step by step instructions on how to put your hair up in various styles with the different sized clips. The first day, I decided to do a french twist. Since I didn’t have to loop a pony tail holder ’round and ’round my hair, it took the same amount of time as just throwing my hair in a boring low pony tail.

I thought it would fall out since it was just the one little clip holding the style in place, but it didn’t. It stayed firm all day long. Even after chasing Hannah around Grandma’s back yard. I also like to put my hair half up with the clip.

Hannah wearing a flexi clip

I tried the smallest flexi clip in Hannah’s hair. She looked beyond adorable, and it didn’t fall out. Her hair is stick straight and super slippery, everything else falls out. She went to creche at church with the flexi clip in her hair, played on the slides, ran around, etc. and came out with her hair looking exactly the same as it did going in. She does have a habit of pulling out her hair clips though, so I’m kind of scared of using one on her very often. I don’t want to lose them. I like them too much!

I also tried the crystal bead headband.

I wore it the first time when Aaron and I went out to dinner for Aaron and Sheri Day because it’s so pretty. I have the worst time with headbands. I love them, but they hate me. When I wear the hard plastic kind, it feels like it is trying to slowly burrow it’s way into my skull just above my ears. I always end up taking them off because they hurt. The fabric and/or elastic kind I have to bobby pin to stay in place. Otherwise I stick them on and then they move to the back of my head and then fall off. In record time.

I was expecting to have to bobby pin my lovely pink Lilla Rose head band in place. But I didn’t. I put it on, adjusted the elastic strap at the bottom, so that it was just the right size for my head, and then decided to gamble. I went bobby pin free. We went out to dinner and my head band didn’t budge.

Me wearing the headband before going out to dinner

Lastly, I tried the You pins. I love all things stars, so they were right up my alley. I watched a video on youtube of how to put my hair into a bun using only them. It’s supposed to work for all hair types, thin, thick, coarse, sleek, slippery. But it didn’t work on mine. That or I did it wrong…. That doesn’t mean I won’t use them. I will still put them in my hair when I can be bothered putting my hair in a messy bun. Sure they won’t actually be holding my hair up, but they will still look awesome.

Comfy Joey

29 Sep

Hello Everyone,

I love baby wearing.  I had a sling for Hannah (which I borrowed from someone), and I have one for Daniel.  They just make life so much easier.

So, since most of you are moms or dads, I just wanted to let you know about a giveaway for a $100 voucher for Comfy Joey Slings.  All you have to do is Like Comfy Joey and Gather for Good on facebook before September 30th and then leave a comment on Nature Moms Blog letting her know that you entered.  A winner will be chosen at random. Just by entering, 1o cents will be donated by Gather for Good to Bruce Rosenberg’s FIGHT against stage 4 Melanoma cancer.  You can also shop at Comfy Joey with the code BRUCE.  15% will be deducted from your total purchase price when you use this code, and that same 15% amount will be donated to Bruce’s cause. You can also donate to Bruce directly through paypal at rosenberg@comporium.net.

In other news, it’s ridiculously windy outside and Aaron has the car today, so we’re stuck in the flat all day.  Sigh.  At least Grandma came over to keep us company.  Also, we are going to a wedding on Sunday so I’ll have to squeeze my I-just-had-a-baby body into one of my dresses.  Wish me luck!

Don’t forget to vote once per day!  Thanks 🙂
