Hannah turns 5

6 Jul

Somehow, it seems like Hannah was born yesterday, but at the same time, it seems like I’ve known her my whole life. I vividly remember the day she was born, and having my very first skin to skin cuddle.

And now she’s 5. FIVE!!!!!! I can’t believe it. She has been planning her party for months. It was her idea to have a gymnastics party at the YMCA (where I go to the gym and she does gymnastics). It was her idea that it would be rainbow themed. Except we couldn’t find any rainbow invitations or cups or bowls or anything else really, so no one knew it was a rainbow party except Hannah. It looked more like a Punky Brewster, nothing matches sort of party. Not that kids these days have any idea who Punky Brewster is.

The paper cups didn’t match the bowls, or the napkins or the party bags. Some had chevron patterns, some different coloured polka dots, others stripes. But Hannah picked them all and she liked them, so who cares. Certainly not me and my mis-matched socks.

UrbMatinpost

She picked out the trinkets for the party bags (she wanted more lollies in there, but I would only let her put a few M&M’s and a lollypop in each), as well as the little toys for pass the parcel, because you know, she’s a big girl now.

There just happened to be a Day out with Thomas on her birthday, so we drove over an hour away in the morning, had a 50 minute ride on a steam train pulled by a character from Thomas (I think it was Duck), then drove back home, had a quick lunch, and then it was party time.

This photo was accidentally taken before I had it framed properly, but she is looking down in the one that shows Thomas’ full funnel.

After the party, Hannah’s best friend Violet (and her mum) came over for a sleepover. We thought maybe after all the running around, the girls would be tired enough to actually go to sleep at bedtime, but we were mistaken. We put them to bed at Hannah and Daniel’s usual time of 6:30. Despite the girls being loud, Daniel was out by 6:35, but the girls carried on until nearly 9pm. It is the first time that they have actually reached the sleep stage during a sleep over without having to be separated though, so I guess that’s progress.

Hannah’s 4!!!!!

5 Jul

It seems like just yesterday I was lying in a hospital bed, gazing lovingly at the slippery little newborn nuzzled on my bare chest.

But it wasn’t just yesterday, it was FOUR YEARS ago!  Mind blown.

On the weekend, we hosted Hannah’s very first individual birthday party (she has joint parties every year, but this was the very first one for just her).  She’s really into the Little Mermaid right now, so we had a mermaid party, complete with costumes.  We hired a party box from Marie Louise Candy Buffets and Events that came with a child sized table and chairs for 10, table cloth, costumes, plates, cups, decorations, and even a lovely little necklace for Hannah to keep.  I’m pretty sure the set up would have looked better had I let Jacqui of Marie Louise set it up for me, but I wanted to do it at the very last minute so Daniel didn’t tear it all apart, so I did it myself.  Well, not all by myself, Aaron and The Jess and Hannah helped too (whilst Daniel had his nap).

I was trying to get photos of the set up and Hannah sat down and started grinning

There were even above table decorations.

The mermaid skirts were made for older kids, but we just pulled them up to the kids’ armpits and all was well.

The intent was to make some little mermaid puppets with curling ribbon hair and glitter glue all over the tails, and a paddle pop (popsicle) stick to hold them up, but all the kids wanted to do on arrival was play.  Duh, I should have known that a bunch of little kids would want to check out all the toys first, rather than doing craft. Rookie mistake.

I planned to do a cheap, super easy version of pin the tail on the donkey outside, but it rained and rained for days before and during the party, so that didn’t quite pan out.  Instead of pin the tail on the donkey, it was going to be colour the flower on the mermaid.  A big mermaid was going to be drawn on the brick wall outside, with a big flower outline on her tail.  The kids would be blindfolded, and spun around, chalk in hand, and then attempt to colour in the flower.  Closest to the flower wins.  But that obviously didn’t happen since I didn’t want 11 muddy wet kids running around afterwards on our beige carpets.

We did manage to play pass the parcel, which went down a treat, minus the one layer that I wrapped but forgot to actually put stuff in (a consequence of watching TV whilst wrapping, I’m sure).  I also wanted them to play musical chairs outside where there was more room, but since we couldn’t, we played musical bump inside instead.  At Hannah’s age, I think that was better anyway.

What is musical bump, I hear you asking?  When the music starts, all the kids dance, and when it stops they sit down on the floor.  Last one to sit down is out.  Except we just kept track of who was out and who was not because everyone still wanted to dance.  As a bonus, they burned lots of their hyper little kid energy off with all the jumping.  Because that is pretty much how they all danced: Jump, jump, jump, hold hands and jump some more.  So cute.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get any photos of the games because I was far too busy running them, and Aaron was far too busy cooking dinner for the kids.

After all the jumping, they were quite hungry, so we sat them down at the lovely little 10 kid table, with one sitting on a parent’s lap because I forgot to count Hannah when I ran my numbers.  I know, I know….  The house was amazingly quiet for about 2 minutes as they gobbled up their chicken nuggets, chips, mini hot dogs, meat pies and sausage rolls.

Hannah loved all of her presents, but didn’t want to slow down long enough to let us read the cards to her and thank who they were from.  We made her do it anyway. Typical four year old I suppose.

It was impossible to get a decent present opening shot. Hannah wouldn't face away from the wall and kids were trying to get as close as they could to see what Hannah got.

And then came the part all the kids had been waiting for: Cake.  At Hannah’s request, I made a strawberry cake with fresh pureed strawberries.  Two actually.  I needed that many to make a mermaid Hannah cake.  I couldn’t find a cake board or platter big enough to hold the cake though, so I went to Bunnings and got some MDF cut to size for $3.50.  Bargain.

After scouring the internet for mermaid cake ideas, I decided to just create my own because all of the internet cakes were either a) way too hard b) hideous, or c) used an actual barbie doll, and I didn’t really want to be scrubbing bits of cake and frosting off of Barbie afterwards.

I traced the rectangular cake pan and cut out the exact size, then drew a mermaid shape onto the cut outs to make the template for the actual cake.

Draw the mermaid and cut it out. I used and off cut from the side of the tail for the top of the head (cut to the right shape of course)

I made some butter cream frosting and first frosted the face, neck and arms.  Then I added some pink food colouring and did the tail.  Finally, I made a batch of chocolate frosting to do the hair.  To make the hair look like hair, just use a knife to make indents in the frosting going the right direction.  Same for the end of the tail.  The tail beads are edible, as is the glitter.  Never mind that the edible glitter cost $9 for a tiny jar. Totally worth it.  Plus I already had it from when I made The Jess’ wedding cake pavolva.

I drew the eye outlines, and the arm details on with a tube of black writing icing and made a little bit of blue icing for the irises.  The clam shell top was made from roll out icing.  I wanted to use real shells, but I couldn’t find any at the shops.  In hindsight, the whole cake would have been better had I used roll out icing instead of butter cream.  It would have been smoother and more professional looking, but whatever, Hannah didn’t care.

“Mommy, when can I have another party?”  Hannah asked me after everyone left.

“I love parties!” Daniel told Aaron.  I guess the party was well received.

Planning

2 Jun

This year is the very first year Hannah is having her own birthday party.  Every other year, we’ve gone to the joint birthday party for all 8 kids born to the women of our antenatal class.  But this year, we are doing both.  She’s been excitedly talking about having a birthday party for months.  I was just going to do the easy thing and have a McDonald’s party until I found this.  Now we’re having a mermaid party at our house.  With 10 kids.  I know, what have I gotten myself in to?

The party is less than a month from now and apart from setting the date and booking the party box (with the kids tables, chairs, decorations and costumes), I haven’t done a thing.  I haven’t made or sent invitations, planned how to make the mermaid cake, figured out what craft we will make on the day, or which games we will play.  At Hannah’s request, the kids will be fed nuggets and chips, so at least I’ve planned the food a little bit.  But do I feed the adults too?  I don’t know what proper kids party etiquette is.  The kids are only 4 and under, so do the adults stay for the party?  I’m assuming so, which means if I don’t make some food for the adults too, they would be sitting around watching their kids eat whilst trying to ignore their rumbling tummies.

I don’t really know what to get her for her birthday either.  I thought that asking her what she’d like would provide me with a really long list of possibilities   Turns out she only wants a chocolate Freddo Frog and a new story book.  Later I finally squeezed out that she might like some “girls clothes” too.  And some new shoes, but she already has about 20 pairs (courtesy of Grandma), so I’m not about to indulge that request.

On the one hand, we want to get her stuff she wants, but on the other, we don’t want her to know what she’s getting.  I think I’ll just have to go to the shops and have a little look-see.  A year or so ago, we thought we’d be getting bunk beds for their birthdays, but with Daniel’s recklessness, that is definitely not an option.  He’d climb to the top and then just walk off because that is the kind of thing that he does.  We were also thinking about getting them a trampoline, but our yard isn’t that big and a trampoline would take up a lot of space.  Of course they don’t actually use the grassed part of the yard much anyway, so maybe that would be a good thing.

Maybe we could have a look at the lego store, she does like to make lego things with Aaron.  I’m not sure who would like that present more though, Hannah, or Aaron.

I’d better start planning, and coming up with some present ideas.  How was your very first kids birthday party?

Daniel turns one

12 Aug

When Hannah turned one, Aaron and I went to Toys ‘r Us and spent way too much money on big fancy presents. When the first child has the first birthday, it’s a big thing. For us and her.

She wasn’t really fussed on opening the presents, and then she didn’t really like them. She never played with them and we ended up giving them to charity.

We weren’t so silly this time. For Daniel’s birthday, we bought a second hand Little People car ramp from a friend at church. Daniel loves cars, to the point where he pushes around any object he can find like it’s a car whilst making brrmmm brrrmmm car noises. Needless to say, we knew he’d like the car ramp. And that was all we bought him. No, I lie, we also bought him a helmet so he can go for bike rides with me on the WeeRide.

Playing with the car ramp right after opening it (still in their sleepy suits)

Grandma, on the other hand, got him approximately 1,000 presents. I may be exaggerating. Whatever. We went over to Grandma and YaYa’s house for Daniel’s family birthday party yesterday and Hannah ended up opening all of Daniel’s presents. He had no interest in ripping wrapping paper whatsoever. But he did like all the cars Hannah found inside them.

Hannah opening Daniel’s present

The Jess usually helps me decorate cakes (and by helps me, I mean, she does it), but she moved to Adelaide (sad face), so I had to do it all by myself. I was going to make a car or a train, since Daniel likes them so much, but I thought I’d go the safer route and make a Daniel cake instead.

I seem to be much better at making a cartoon Daniel on the computer than I do on a cake….

So it wasn’t the best looking cake in the world, but apart from stealing cake bowls out of the trash and licking them on Hannah’s birthday, he hasn’t actually eaten cake before, so I’m sure he didn’t really mind.

Mmmm…cake

The zoo and Luna Park

28 Jul

In addition to the little family get together with a Mickey Mouse cake, and way too many presents from Grandma, Aunty Jess, Romana (Hannah’s best friend’s Mum), and I took her and Violet (her best friend) to Taronga Zoo. AND, we had the yearly joint birthday party with the other 7 kids from our antenatal class. This year, it was at Luna Park (you know, the amusement park right next to the Sydney Harbour Bridge that was shut down for ages due to noise complaints from all of the richies living in the multi-million dollar apartments over looking the harbour. Well, it is really loud with all the rides and music and screaming…).

Hannah about to blow out the candle on her Mickey Mouse cake

We took the kids on the train to the zoo, with the plan that Daniel would sleep in the pram on the train and then be all rested and cheerful when we got to the zoo.

Yeah right.

That didn’t happen. Sigh.

Instead, he proceeded to scream for most of the hour long train ride. I pushed the pram forward and back, forward and back a million times whilst everyone stared at me wondering why I was not picking up the screaming baby. Hannah was happily playing a Dora The Explorer iPad game in the other pram seat.

Phil and Teds Dash Buggy With Doubles Kit Black

Well people, I was trying to get him to sleep. I put a blanket over the sunshade of the pram so he couldn’t keep himself stimulated from all the people faces and scenery flying by. A lot of times, he does scream in the pram before falling asleep. It’s the wind down.

I think he would have slept too, if the old asian man in the seat across from us didn’t get up from his seat and pull the blanket up so Daniel could see, followed by making goofy faces at him for half an hour. I tried explaining that I was trying to get him to sleep, but was met with a toothless grin, nodding head, and broken english “He just want to see. He happy when he can see.” Sigh.

By the time we got on the ferry, it was almost lunch time.

More screaming. He was hungry and wouldn’t sleep.

Finally we got him to sleep after lunch. At the zoo. After I breastfed him at a table in the food area. A man came over and asked if he could have one of the chairs I wasn’t using. As he was asking he saw that I was, in fact, breastfeeding a baby, and he went bright red mid-sentence.

Fisher-Price Little People Zoo Talkers Animal Sounds Zoo

Hannah had a great time at the zoo with her best friend Violet. Hannah got a camera for her birthday, and she and Violet took a lot of photos at the zoo. I made a blog for Hannah’s photos. It’s interesting what 3 year olds take photos of. Here is her zoo post if you’d like to see it.

Last weekend was the Luna Park party. Hannah has been looking forward to it for months. Every time something came in the mail, bills, menus’s for delivery Chinese food, whatever, she would get it out of the mailbox and happily exclaim that it was from Luna Park, about her party.

I think she could have stayed at Luna Park for 3 days straight, riding rides repeatedly, and still not get bored. She’s a daredevil.

I’m have a giveaway on my reviews blog at the moment, win one of two book packs containing What to Expect When You’re Expecting, What to Expect The First Year, and What to Expect The Second Year. Entering is fast and easy, and open to people worldwide. Go here to enter.
