Facebook is being ridiculous

2 Jun

I’ve worked hard to gain over 1,00o followers on my Mommy Adventures Facebook page. I used to get a lot of views on my blog coming from the links I put to new posts on the Facebook page.

Not so much anymore. Facebook has decided to charge people with fan pages money to “promote” their posts. Posts used to just show up in news feeds. Sigh. What is the point of having a fan page then? Huh Facebook? Why do you like to annoy us so?

This is what I see when I push the “Promote” button on any of my status updates

Apparently, you can just hover over the ‘liked’ button to have a pages posts end up in your newsfeed. I tried to post a tutorial picture about it on my page (not that anyone would see it), but Facebook said there was something wrong with the image. Maybe it didn’t like the fact that I called it “Stupid Facebook,” because there was nothing wrong with the image file.

This image is floating around Facebook. No idea who made it, so I can’t really give them credit 😦

Why can’t I decide what I want to see in my news feed? Maybe I want to see everyone’s (everyone who is my friend I mean) status updates and photos and things in my feed. In chronological order. Maybe I don’t want Facebook to decide for me. Especially when I click the “Show recent first” button. Fair enough if you prefer the “top stories” option. But I don’t. Sigh.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Facebook, 2nd Edition

I think I’m quite capable of clicking the “hide all by ___” button if I don’t want to see posts from someone in my news feed. It’s really not that hard. So why does Facebook get to chose for me?

I “Like” a whole bunch of other blogs on my Mommy Adventures page. I like to go through my news feed in the middle of the night when I’m feeding Daniel (yes, he still breastfeeds at night. He is a booby monster.  Sigh. One day I will take the boobies away from him. He probably won’t like that…). Everyone posts links to their blog posts, and I read any that seem interesting to me. It’s just what I like to do when feeding, since I only have one free hand, and would rather not spend the whole time starting into space.

Yesterday, I got on my Mommy Adventures page to look at my news feed and was met by this:

Sometimes I hate you, Facebook

What? There are no more posts to show me? I hadn’t seen any at all. Seriously Facebook?

Also, you’ll notice that my “talking about this,” and “weekly total reach” are both down. A lot. Well Facebook, I wonder why that is? Maybe because I didn’t pay to have you show it to my fans? Sigh.

If you want to see all of my posts, do that hover thing, otherwise you can always sign up to get my blog posts via email (on the sidebar there is a button).

That explains a lot. No wonder their stock crashed. Now, if you could just investigate why the recent changes at wordpress have caused the search engine traffic to drop off….

I surf the net in the middle of the night while nursing my 8 month old. The only time I get to read and check email. Guess that’s why I haven’t Ferber-ized him yet. It’s my me time, even though I have a milk parasite.

You don’t have to promote your posts (you’ve already posted it). It’s a choice to further promote your post outside the normal reach of your FB Page. Businesses pay for promotion, it’s just normal to pay for promotions; if you aren’t monetizing your FB Page to help offset promotional costs then that’s your choice to do as you wish. I just don’t see the point in rubbishing Facebook for trying to make money, they’re a business too you know.
